What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental treatment for infection in the innermost layer of your natural tooth, the pulp. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue which extends from the crown of the tooth to the tip of the roots. The dental pulp is very important during development, but once a tooth is fully mature, it can survive without the pulp. If you have a tooth infection, you may need a root canal to clear out the infection.

Sign You May Need A Root Canal

Severe tooth pain that doesn’t subside. The facial pain may radiate to your jaw, face or adjacent teeth

Swollen gums. If you have an infection, your gums may swell & sometimes a tooth abscess will form near the infected tooth.

Discolored Tooth. The infection keeps blood from flowing to your tooth & your tooth can start to darken.

Chewing is painful. Pressure to the tooth when you eating or touch it, may mean the nerves are damaged.

Swollen jaw. Your jaw may swell due
to the infection.

Loose tooth. Infection can soften the bones supporting your fragile tooth & make your tooth feel mobile.

What To Expect After A Root Canal:

Avoid any chewing until the anesthetic wears off after a couple of hours.

A permanent crown may be recommended following your tooth root. If so, avoid chewing on your treated tooth until a permanent crown is in place. Avoid sticky, hard foods & favor the opposite side of your mouth. Unless noted by your dentist, it is critical to have a dental crown placed on your root canal treated tooth as soon as possible.

It’s normal for some discomfort following a root canal therapy. Take over counter medicine to help with any discomfort.
